The methodology to estimate volumes of food waste produced for given food manufacturing processes in Europe are based on the volumes of sold manufactured good for the food sector (obtained from Eurostat statistics database- Prodcom initiative).

When coupled with waste or product percentages published in the literature for a given process (i.e. production of tomato paste produces 82.20% waste), the amount of waste for a given process can be determined.

For the following categories of processed foods, product or waste percentages couldn’t be found in the literature consulted to date, hence the volumes of waste determined for these given categories were approximated using product or waste percentages for similar processes.Amount of product manufactured X Published waste for Process = Volume of food waste produced
